The Lancashire Plate, of ll,ooosovs, to be run at Manchester in 1888, has closed with 280 entries. The promoters stipulated for 270. An agitation has been started in America against steeplechasing. The New York World says : — The troubles of the time-honoured sport of steeplechasing have begun, and the Illinois courts are to be called upon to decide whether it is illegal or not. It is contended that the risking of life and limb by man and horse involved in it is to be construed as abuse of the horse, and hence it is prohibited by the laws against cruelty to animals. Several arrests have been made near Chicago, and the trials will soon come on. There will not be great regret anywhere that this particular form of sport is prohibited.
